New on DVD this week: The Runaways

Posted on 18 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments
The Runaways (2010, Sony, R, $28) - Based on a memoir by Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), who co-founded the Runaways along with Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart), Floria Sigismondi’s biopic covers the rise and fall of the gutsy all-girl group. Curie and Jett - along with their Svengali-like manager Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) - worship at the altar of rock-and-roll - and so does this movie.

In the end, it feels a bit slight but as an evocation of the mid-70s L.A. scene and a testament to the power of three chords, it’s the cherry bomb. Extras: making of featurettes and commentary by Stewart, Fanning and Jett.

Also - "Cop Out," "Repo Men," "The Losers," "The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers," "Entre Nos," "I Do & I Don’t," "The Red Shoes," "The Professional," "The Wronged Man," "Prodigal Sons," "Jersey Shore Uncensored: Season One," "Matlock: The Fifth Season," "White House Revealed."

Dakota on Choosing Roles

Posted on 17 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments
She made her film debut at the age of 6 alongside Sean Penn in the drama I Am Sam, and appeared all grown-up earlier this year with Kristen Stewart in the 70's punk-rock epic The Runaways, but Dakota Fanning insists she is still taking her time when it comes to choosing adult movie roles.

"When you start out young, people get really attached to who you are at 6 years old," Fanning says in the August issue of Marie Claire, on stands now. "I hope that The Runaways was kind of a moment to be like, 'You know, I'm not that young little girl anymore, but I'm still not all grown up, either.'"

With a busy year ahead, including finishing up high school at North Hollywood's prestigious Campbell Hall as well as wrapping the final two Twilight films, Fanning is looking forward to the future, but still enjoying the present. "As you get older, there's so much more that you can do in films," she says. "I've never wanted to rush that; I've always wanted to do what's right for my age, but as you approach 18, a whole new world opens up to you as an actor, and I really look forward to that."

Apart from the Twilight films, Dakota reportedly has two other projects in the works.

Dakota on shoes, Kristen Stewart and her career legacy

Posted on 16 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments
Dakota Fanning discussed her life with FLARE magazine, telling them what it was like to work with Kristen Stewart, talked about her beloved Doc Martens, and the legacy she hopes she'll achieve.

Dakota said, "Kristen is one of my best friends, so it was really funny playing her enemy in Eclipse . . . But that's what acting is and when they yell 'cut,' you can go back to your normal self."

And she told the magazine her favourite fashion item right now is: "In Push, I wear these Doc Martens. They're worn-in and they're so soft, and they're one of the only ones that were made with a zipper. That has affected my style in a completely new way. Now I wear them every day."

Asked about the career legacy she hopes she'll leave, Dakota answered, "I hope people will have been moved by something that I've done or [that I've] helped somebody through a hard time . . . and that I've stayed true to who I am and have been a nice person."

Dakota Fanning: I Can’t Do Anything But Act

Posted on 15 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments
Dakota says she doesn't know how to do anything apart from acting.

The 16-year-old actress began starring in movies as a child, finding fame in box-office hits such as Charlotte's Web, Man on Fire and War of the Worlds.

Dakota admits she would be lost if she wasn’t a successful movie star, and says she feels her most comfortable when she's on screen.

"I've realised that I don't know how to do anything else," confessed the star in an interview with the Australian newspaper The Daily Telegraph. "Acting is the only thing I feel most myself."

Dakota has recently been praised for her role as royal vampire Jane in the Twilight movie franchise, where she stars alongside Kristen Stewart.

The young actresses also star together in new movie The Runaways, where Dakota plays Cherie Currie, singer of the 1970s all-girl teenage rock band and Kristen plays rocker Joan Jett.

The pair have become close friends and even share a lesbian kiss together in the movie. The starlets have forged a firm bond which Dakota thinks has stemmed from the intimate and open nature of acting.

"It's pretty much impossible for me to lie or to be fake around Kristen because she would know," she explained.

"When you're acting, just being completely open and completely bare, having nothing protecting you is pretty rare and wonderful."

Dakota Looking Forward To New Roles

Posted on 14 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments
The 16-year-old star’s first major big screen role was alongside Sean Penn in I Am Sam when she was just six. Dakota has appeared in a string of hit movies since then and is keen to continue developing her career.

The starlet recently played rocker Cherie Currie alongside Kristen Stewart in The Runaways and is confident the role proved she isn’t a child anymore.

“When you start out young, people get really attached to who you are at 6 years old,” Dakota said in an interview with Marie Claire. “I hope that The Runaways was kind of a moment to be like, ‘You know, I’m not that young little girl anymore, but I’m still not all grown up, either.’

“As you get older, there’s so much more that you can do in films. I’ve never wanted to rush that; I’ve always wanted to do what’s right for my age, but as you approach 18, a whole new world opens up to you as an actor, and I really look forward to that.”

Dakota and Kristen shared a kiss in one scene of the movie and although the lip lock whipped up a media frenzy, the blonde star insists she didn’t think too much about the experience.

“It’s out of the way, and it was with my friend and a girl - no pressure,” Dakota explained. “It was not something Cherie [Currie] and Joan [Jett] ever really spoke about, and that’s how it was filmed - as not that big of a deal.”

Dakota became good friends with Kristen on the set of The Runaways and the pair got the chance to work together again when Dakota joined the cast of Twilight.

Dakota plays a villainous vampire in the hit franchise and she loved wearing red contact lenses for the role.

“It’s something that’s always been there for me, that I have huge blue eyes – it’s been something that people have always talked about,” Dakota added. “But I enjoyed the red. You’re automatically transformed into a creature when you put those red eyes in.”

New scans of 'Flare' August Issue

Posted on 14 Jul 2010 by Cordy 0 Comments
Dakota Fanning went with bright red lipstick for the August issue of FLARE. She has the Summer off from high school to enjoy the continued success of Eclipse, and, in a few months, Dakota will reunite with her Twilight crew to work on Breaking Dawn — make sure to check out what the series's screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg told us we can expect in the final installments. Dakota opened up to the magazine about her work in the vampire franchise and also spoke about her friendship with costar Kristen Stewart and her surprisingly normal life. Dakota said:

- On her down-to-earth daily life: "I have such a normal life when I'm not working . . . It's just nice to be around people you care about and who know you best."

- On acting alongside Kristen in Eclipse: "Kristen is one of my best friends, so it was really funny playing her enemy in Eclipse . . . But that's what acting is and when they yell 'cut,' you can go back to your normal self."

- On her favorite wardrobe staple: "In Push, I wear these Doc Martens. They're worn-in and they're so soft, and they're one of the only ones that were made with a zipper. That has affected my style in a completely new way. Now I wear them every day."
- On the career legacy she hopes she'll leave: "I hope people will have been moved by something that I've done or [that I've] helped somebody through a hard time . . . and that I've stayed true to who I am and have been a nice person."

WATCH: Kristen Stewart + Dakota Fanning Rocking Out

Posted on 13 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments
The hotly-anticipated trailer for The Runaways is out.

The film, about pop-punk legend Joan Jett, will see Kristen make a swift departure from her Twilight role as mopey Bella Swann, kissing girls instead of Robert Pattinson.

We're looking forward to seeing if Kristen can pull off a different character, if she can sing, if she can attract an audience without the prospect of a semi-nude Taylor Lautner, and just how rock and roll the girls get...

I've liked Dakota since I was about 10 years old. I think I saw her for the first time, in Man on Fire. I first noticed her, because she has the same age as me. Then I noticed her kick-ass acting talent and sweet-ness. My favorite role of hers would probably be Jane Volturi, in New Moon and Eclipse, because it was a new role for her, and she totally nailed it. She has also inspired me to begin with acting. She is my role-model, and I start crying evertime I see a new photoshoot with her or if she has a new role in a movie. I just love her more than I've ever loved any actress. I could totally write more about how much I love her, but that would take years. I LOVE DAKOTA FANNING. :')
