Floria Sigismondi Talks About Making The Runaways

Posted on 22 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments
The Runaways, the feature film about the first all-girl rock 'n' roll band of the same name, is in stores on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday (July 20).

The film stars Kristen Stewart (Twilight, Adventureland) and Dakota Fanning (Twilight, I Am Sam) as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, respectively, two of the band's members. It follows their short-lived career from their formation in 1975 to their break-up four years later.

The Runaways is based on Currie's Neon Angel: A Memoir Of A Runaway book, and was written and directed by Canada's Floria Sigismondi. She's become well-known for her music video work, including Marilyn Manson's infamous clip for "The Beautiful People."

CHARTattack recently spoke with Sigismondi about what it was like to make her first feature film, working with Jett and Currie, and why she thinks films are "little miracles."

FABLife’s DVD Pick Of The Week With Exclusive Runaways Bonus Clip!

Posted on 20 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments

Bristling with all-girl attitude and spandex, The Runaways were one of the great glam rock groups of the 1970s. Whether the “Cherry Bomb” hit-makers have one of the great stories to tell is another stack of vinyl. This biopic follows a familiar path, albeit one dressed up in plastic fashion and simpering with sunken-cheek cool. Guitarist Joan Jett (Twilight’s Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) are brought together in an unholy marriage by unhinged Svengali Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon). From there it’s initial success, drug problems and disintegration–with a few same-sex smooches on the way. Aspiring riot grrl rockers will dig the big time’s adrenaline rush; everyone else will shake their heads knowingly when it all goes up in angel dust.

Extras: KStew, DFann and the real Joan Jett all contribute to the commentary track ‘n’ there’s a “making of” segment.

Starlet Showdown: Kristen Stewart vs. Dakota Fanning

Posted on 20 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments
They've squared off in Twilight's big-screen saga and rocked out side by side on stage as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in The Runaways, a biopic in which both starlets shone. We think it's about time for a Kristen Stewart vs. Dakota Fanning showdown.

Round 1: Range

Fanning has far more range than you might expect from a 16-year-old -- until you remember she acted in her first film at age eight. From sadistic vampire telepath and psychic fugitive to jailbait rock star, rape victim, alien, little girl under attack by aliens, mentally handicapped man's daughter, and the animated heroine of a dark fairytale. Kristen Stewart also kicked off her screen career at eight. She's also done a turn as a jailbait rock star and rape victim, as well as the girlfriend of a vampire, a teleporter, and a wilderness adventurer. She's also done stripper, amusement park employee, and disappearing diabetic daughter. Both have tried their talents in similar genres, from science fiction and horror to comedy and drama, and have dug deep to deliver complex, compelling characters.

Winner: Dakota Fanning
On paper it's a tie. But in reality, though her resume boasts a diversity of characters and movie genres, we can't help but feel Kristen Stewart delivers them all with the same aloof, tough-yet-fragile, pensive persona -- as charismatic as it may be. Dakota Fanning is more of a chameleon.

Round 2: Star Stamina

A good measure of an actress' fortitude and skill is sometimes whether or not she can hold her own with her A-list colleagues and how often she's chosen to star with them. Kristen Stewart has held her own with Sean Penn, Robert De Niro, and Jodie Foster. Dakota Fanning, on the other hand, has also worked with Penn and De Niro as well as Tom Cruise, Forrest Whittaker, Denzel Washington, and Charlize Theron. Both Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning have received kudos from the big names they've brushed shoulders with on set.

Winner: Dakota Fanning wins by a smidge.

Round 3: Awards

Excusing her Twilight Razzie (it's Bella's fault), Kristen Stewart earned a 2008 Screen Actors Guild Award nom for her performance in Into the Wild. She also won this year's BAFTA rising star award and was included in Adventureland's 2009 Gotham Awards nom for best ensemble cast. Dakota Fanning, meanwhile, was the youngest person (at age eight) to be nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for I Am Sam. She also nabbed a 2006 Saturn Award for War of the Worlds and the Broadcast Critics Associate Award for best young actress/actor twice.

Winner: So far Dakota Fanning's garnered more total awards at 17 compared to six for Kristen Stewart, and neither can trump the other with an Oscar, so we're ruling in favor of Dakota Fanning again.

Round 4: The Future

For the most part both Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart seem capable of and partial to challenging and unique roles -- the stuff of Oscars. Neither has backed themselves into a rom-com, action-adventure, or any other film genre corner and both seem willing to take risks and test their abilities. Next for Kristen Stewart is a film based on Jack Kerouac's iconic book On the Road and K-11, in which she's rumored to play a transsexual prisoner with autism. That's bold! What's next for Dakota Fanning? Talk on the boulevard is she'll play Betsy to Al Pacino's Napoleon in the adaptation of the beloved children's book Betsy and the Emperor. She's also slated to slip into the deadly shoes of 17-year-old assassin Lily in Furious Angel.

Winner: We think they both have Oscar potential and are certainly aiming high enough to reach a golden boy someday soon, so we're calling this one a tie.

The Verdict: Dakota Fanning wins by a moderate margin, so far. Only time will tell who truly triumphs.

New on DVD this week: The Runaways

Posted on 18 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments
The Runaways (2010, Sony, R, $28) - Based on a memoir by Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), who co-founded the Runaways along with Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart), Floria Sigismondi’s biopic covers the rise and fall of the gutsy all-girl group. Curie and Jett - along with their Svengali-like manager Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) - worship at the altar of rock-and-roll - and so does this movie.

In the end, it feels a bit slight but as an evocation of the mid-70s L.A. scene and a testament to the power of three chords, it’s the cherry bomb. Extras: making of featurettes and commentary by Stewart, Fanning and Jett.

Also - "Cop Out," "Repo Men," "The Losers," "The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers," "Entre Nos," "I Do & I Don’t," "The Red Shoes," "The Professional," "The Wronged Man," "Prodigal Sons," "Jersey Shore Uncensored: Season One," "Matlock: The Fifth Season," "White House Revealed."

Dakota on Choosing Roles

Posted on 17 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments
She made her film debut at the age of 6 alongside Sean Penn in the drama I Am Sam, and appeared all grown-up earlier this year with Kristen Stewart in the 70's punk-rock epic The Runaways, but Dakota Fanning insists she is still taking her time when it comes to choosing adult movie roles.

"When you start out young, people get really attached to who you are at 6 years old," Fanning says in the August issue of Marie Claire, on stands now. "I hope that The Runaways was kind of a moment to be like, 'You know, I'm not that young little girl anymore, but I'm still not all grown up, either.'"

With a busy year ahead, including finishing up high school at North Hollywood's prestigious Campbell Hall as well as wrapping the final two Twilight films, Fanning is looking forward to the future, but still enjoying the present. "As you get older, there's so much more that you can do in films," she says. "I've never wanted to rush that; I've always wanted to do what's right for my age, but as you approach 18, a whole new world opens up to you as an actor, and I really look forward to that."

Apart from the Twilight films, Dakota reportedly has two other projects in the works.

Dakota on shoes, Kristen Stewart and her career legacy

Posted on 16 Jul 2010 by Celeste 0 Comments
Dakota Fanning discussed her life with FLARE magazine, telling them what it was like to work with Kristen Stewart, talked about her beloved Doc Martens, and the legacy she hopes she'll achieve.

Dakota said, "Kristen is one of my best friends, so it was really funny playing her enemy in Eclipse . . . But that's what acting is and when they yell 'cut,' you can go back to your normal self."

And she told the magazine her favourite fashion item right now is: "In Push, I wear these Doc Martens. They're worn-in and they're so soft, and they're one of the only ones that were made with a zipper. That has affected my style in a completely new way. Now I wear them every day."

Asked about the career legacy she hopes she'll leave, Dakota answered, "I hope people will have been moved by something that I've done or [that I've] helped somebody through a hard time . . . and that I've stayed true to who I am and have been a nice person."

I've liked Dakota since I was about 10 years old. I think I saw her for the first time, in Man on Fire. I first noticed her, because she has the same age as me. Then I noticed her kick-ass acting talent and sweet-ness. My favorite role of hers would probably be Jane Volturi, in New Moon and Eclipse, because it was a new role for her, and she totally nailed it. She has also inspired me to begin with acting. She is my role-model, and I start crying evertime I see a new photoshoot with her or if she has a new role in a movie. I just love her more than I've ever loved any actress. I could totally write more about how much I love her, but that would take years. I LOVE DAKOTA FANNING. :')
